July news

Updated: Oct 5

A little over a month since our last update and there’s been another hive of activity, with people from across the local community contributing to the Big Build in many different ways.

But before that, a word on the website. There are no prizes for noticing that we now have a totaliser on the homepage! The simple bar chart shows how much money has been raised to date and how much more we need for phases 1 and 2.

You can also click the link by the chart for a detailed breakdown of how the money has been raised, as well as more information on the estimated costs of the works. In time we will be adding a further bar chart showing money saved through donated materials, labour etc. and the impact that has on the overall cost of each phase.

Back to the fundraising itself and July saw another busy month of personal challenges and community get togethers, raising thousands of pounds in the process. A special mention to Year 4’s Maggie Bowring, who raised a mightily impressive £832 completing her challenge of reading 1.5m letters - equivalent to around 1,200 pages – in less than two months. Well done, Maggie!

Elsewhere, a well-attended family fun day at the stunning Williamstrip Cricket Club raised £360. Thank you to the club for generously allowing us to co-host the event with them, as well as to all the volunteers and people who donated food for sale and raffle prizes, and of course to everyone who turned up to make the day such a cheerful moneymaker!

A further £330 was raised at a pop-up bar and barbeque during a sports afternoon for Hatherop Primary’s kids and parents. The event followed the school’s annual sports day and drew an impressively large group of willing participants with very varying levels of enthusiasm and competitiveness! Safe to say, a lot of fun was had by all and some valuable extra funds added to pot. Thank you to Hatherop Big Build’s chief fundraiser Helen Forbes and her many helpers for putting on another very enjoyable afternoon.

In other news, we can tell you that the Euro Sweepstakes raised a whopping £702, so thank you again to everyone who bought tickets and, more notably, sold them! Also, we had the first draw of the 300 Club on 19 July, with one lucky Coln resident picking up the £200 first prize.

Early August saw the Coln Stores village party, which proved another great success, attended by lots of locals all keen for an evening of lively entertainment. But since these updates are shaping up into quarterly affairs, we will keep you on tenterhooks as to how much that raised until the next time… 😉

Happy summer!
